 What is Job Burnout?

A Harvard Business Review article says, “when the conditions and demands you encounter at work — like workload, level of autonomy, and norms of interpersonal behavior — exceed your capacity to handle them, you’re at risk of burning out.”

I disagree with this definition. You used to welcome these challenges and turned them into your growth. Taking more than you could handle has been the norm in the business, like your quarterly revenue goal. Have you ever signed up for “stretch goals” even when you are hitting the target?

Burnout means you have ignored your life to meet other people’s expectations, and now you are nearly or entirely drained. You were ok with this arrangement when you were in 20s, but now your mind and body are starting to say “NO” to your directions.

Any additional tasks or unfavorable factors like an under-performing team member can make you angry and irritable when you are drained. Sometimes a new role beyond your comfort zone can make you excessively anxious since you’ve been equated your life-worth to meeting expectations of others. To fill up the gas, you may have resorted to recreational drugs, alcohol, gambling, or sex. Or you may have taken up on healthier alternatives like intense workouts, traveling, and testosterone therapy. But the relief is short-lived, and you feel you are dragging your feet at work and home.

Our approaches to Job Burnout

We approach Job Burnout in two ways; Symptom management and Root-cause resolutions.

If you drag your feet to work every day, yelling at your spouse in the evening, and drink several glasses of wine every day, it means you are in pain. We help you reduced the psychological pain first with mindfulness and body relaxation techniques.

As the pain subsides, we help you evaluate your value and belief system, which often come from your upbringing and other significant experiences in the past. With mindfulness and/or hypnotherapy, we explore the negative patterns of thoughts and behaviors, then work with you to create meaningful changes so that you can regain the joy of your life back in everyday life.

 Try this self-diagnosis.

Ask yourself:

  • Have you become cynical or critical at work?

  • Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started?

  • Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers, or clients?

  • Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?

  • Do you find it hard to concentrate?

  • Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?

  • Do you feel disillusioned about your job?

  • Are you using food, drugs, or alcohol to feel better or to simply not feel?

  • Have your sleep habits changed?

  • Are you troubled by unexplained headaches, stomach or bowel problems, or other physical complaints?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be experiencing job burnout.
